Question
My son is a college graduate and is interested in the Coast Guard.  He scored a 93 on the ASVAB and I am trying to understand what exactly that means.  Can you help me?  Also, he would like to apply to OCS.  Given his ASVAB score is this a reasonable application to make?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Kathy, Sorry it took me so long to get back with you...Its been a busy week!

The ASVAB is a exam that is structured to find out what a person can do based off the previous education received. The highest score that you can get on this exam is a 99. Since your son has a 93, he is ASVAB qualified for all the jobs that the Air Force has in the career field bands.

Now to apply to OCS, he has to take the AFOQT. This is an exam that is structured for those who want to become an officer.  It stands for Air Force Qualification Test. The minimum score is based off the minimum score of all the sections and usually requires an 80 percent or higher combined. If your son does not have the 4 year degree required,   then he can enlist, get his degree from the CCAF or Community College of the Air Force and Tuition Assistance, which is 100%.

Your son has the education requirements to to enter any branch of the service. Depending on the other requirements, he should have no problem finding what he wants....

If you are planning on joining the military, your number 1 decision factor in making this kind of move is that you need to be more concerned about serving your country than your country serving you!! All the benefits are the best that you can find. Education is at a premium right now and its the most rewarding thing that you can do.
