Question
I have two questions. One, my psychiatrist mentioned something to me today about not being able to enlist if I have been on ADD medications or anti-depressants. I haven't been put on these medications yet, but my psychiatrist may yet prescribe something to me. Will this cause me to be unable to enlist in the US Army? Or in any way restrict my job options? I plan on joining with an 18x contract.

My other question is this, I am currently on medication for low thyroid levels. If I join the military, will I be able to continue my medication through boot camp and other training? Without my thyroid medication boot camp and training will be infinitely more difficult for me. Will the Army allow me to continue my medication?

Thank you in advance for any answer you may have.

Answer
Dan, IF you haven't taken any of these medications, then it will not affect your enlistment, IF YOU TAKE THEM, then you will have to be off of them for 2 years before enlisting... My first question is WHY are you seeing a Psyc? Are you sure that you are mentally ready for this type of position?

There are two types of thyroid conditions Hyper and hypo, the high thyroid (Hyper) is disqualifying, Low (Hypo) may be controlled by medication and is allowable. Check with the ric to be sure, but I think that's right.

The military dosnt like to have their trainees taking meds while in training, so make sure that this IS allowable by getting the current info from the ric.
