Question
I am currently enlisted in the Air Force Reserves, 12 years. I am a ADN registered nurse of 4 years and will graduate with my BSN, May 09. I have spoken with the Air Force Reserves Health recruiter and it seems that he can't or won't assist me in getting commissioned because he won't get any credit since I'm currently enlisted. I understand; so I've asked someone that was recently commissioned to assist me in completing the packet. After much frustration, I considered switching to the Navy Reserve. My question is.... is it possible to submit a commissioning packet/application to both branches and see which one materializes first. Any responses is appreciated.

Answer
Andy,
Good thinking, but not a good idea. What if both Services answer simultaneously with a Yes answer?  It's not a good idea to leave one hanging while you take the other.  They will have set aside a crucial slot for you and then you don't go.

After submission, you'll get you answer in 4-6 weeks.  If it's No, then submit your package to the other.

You're right that your recruiter won't get any credit for you.  You'll be considered as a "re-enlistment" and not a new recruit.  Recruiters are given a separate very small quota for re-enlistment.  That's because you'll be competing against everybody on active-duty who wants to re-enlist and the Services believe those folks should have first priority.

Still that's no excuse for him not helping you.  I'm a volunteer...I don't get any $ either for helping you, but I feel it's the right thing to do.

Go to another recruiter in another town.  It's perfectly permissible to shop around.  Your current recruiter is just there for your convenience.

Or you can visit

and chat live on-line with an Air Force Reserves Health recruiter at Lackland AFB, TX

The Navy is a good second choice but don't give up on the AF just yet.
Good luck, and thanks for serving.
