Question
QUESTION: My former foster child has had issues with depression and a red flag was not raised during recruitment. During Boot the opportunity was given to reveal the actual situation as things started to fall apart virtually upon arrival. We received a call asking us to verify the information, which we did.  Based on our brief discussion we expect that a separation will occur.  Although not our child, we still care. Can you provide an overview of how bad the situation might be and what happens now including the mundane things such as transportation home, any pay, bonuses, penalties?

ANSWER: Liz:

He's likely to get charged with 'Fraudulent enlistment' and given a general, or other than honorable discharge.  However, since he told them right away, they might just send him home with a 'Convienence of the Gov't' discharge for failing to adapt to training, or something along those lines.  He'll be provided transportation back home at no cost to him or you.  He'll be paid for his time on active duty.  He will NOT be eligible for any veterans benefits, bonus's, etc.

He'll never be able to enlist again, at least in the particular branch he's being discharged from.

Good luck with your situation.  I realize it's difficult.

QUESTION: Jason,  I'm looking for more detail.  We were told that a bus ticket would be provided, but that's all.  For example, we know that there will be some pay after deductions for purchases at the exchange, but will the recruit get the pay on the way out the gate?  Or will it be mailed later? If payment is given on the way out the gate, will it be it be cash or a check, and if it's a check,  will it be possible to get cash to travel with?  It will be at least a 48 hr trip home and since recruits are only allowed to have $20 when they arrive this is important.  Also how much warning does the recruit receive before being escorted off the base? Will there be 15 minutes notice to change to civilian clothes and that's all? or will there be time before that (like a couple of days)so  other travel arrangements (besides Greyhound)can be if more appropriate in this situation?

Thanks, Liz

Answer
Liz:

Bus ticket is all they get, correct.  The pay is usually 'direct deposited' into an account, but if he doesn't have one yet, they may cut him a hard check.  It's unlikely they will mail him anything.  Usually the people discharged are taken to the bus station, then they are allowed to cash checks, etc.  You could always wire him money via Western Union, he'll have a chance to contact you sooner or later.  They will outprocess him just like they would any other Marine being discharged, he'll have time to make phone calls, etc.  He will be provided the bus ticket but other travel arrangements will NOT be provided.  That would be up to you.  He'll be briefed on all of this during his outprocessing.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
