Question
QUESTION: Mr Lorenz, Hi, I like to ask about scoliosis for Marines. I have scoliosis but it doesn't bother me. I can do any hard work. I even do push-ups. Do you think they will disqualify me? Will they allow me to have a waiver? I am a college Grad. Thanks.

ANSWER: Ami,

It depends on the severity of the scoliosis you have. They do allow entry, but its limited to the degree in which you are affected. I have a very slight curvature of the spine, but its with in limitations.

QUESTION: I heard that someone told me that even 40 degree, they will allow people to enter the military. Is this true? Thank you very much and sorry to bother you.

Answer
Sorry Its taken so long to reply, as some of you know Im preparing for a extended deployment.

Ami, The best answer that I can give you since I do not have the regulation sitting right here in front of me is to get with the recruiter on this one. This is a decision that is made primarily by the Chief Medical Officer at the MEPS. If he needs further guidance then he refers it to the Surgeon General. You recruiter will be able to get you started in the process to get you that answer.

I have spent the past 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, 3 years was assigned as an Enlisted Accessions Recruiter. I have been deployed various times to several locations. If it is a career in the military you are looking for or thinking about I most likely have the answer. I still have contacts with in the recruiting field and if I don't know the answer then I have folks who do where I can find the answer. I am very blunt and straight forward and will make no attempts to BS you. I will give you the best information that I possible can can. If you think that you cant handle the answer that I give you, then don't ask the question...... If you are planning on joining the military, your number 1 decision factor in making this kind of move is that you need to be more concerned about serving your country than your country serving you!! All the benefits are the best that you can find. Education is at a premium right now and its the most rewarding thing that you can do. If I dont answer right away probably means that I am busy, but have patience, I will get to you.
