Question
My grandson is in jev. detention for violation of probation, (times to be home ) . He is really doing well and is working on his GED. He turned 18 in January, he knows now he has to obey the laws and has a very postive attitude toward what he needs to do. He is very intersted in the Coast Guard,we, his grandparents suggested this, can he use his Ged to enlist. I read where that would be hard to do? My question is  Would he have a chance to join with his Ged? Thank you for your time.  Juanita Howard

Answer
Ma'am:

Getting into the military with a GED is very difficult, but not impossible.  There are only a few slots in each branch, per quarter, for people with GED's.  He'll need to be off probation/parole, and not have had issues other than the curfew violations.  All of that, quite frankly, works against him.   But, if he wants it bad enough, it's not impossible.   As soon as he can, he should talk to the recruiter of his choice, and do whatever it is they tell him to do.  He may need to get some college credits, but that's not impossible, either.   He'll just need to work at it.

 Hopefully, this helps some.

Best regards,

Jason

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
