Question
Hello ma'am.

I was in the Army as an 11B from 11/03 to 10/04.  I got seperated with a Chapter 5-17 due to depression symptoms.  I received a fully honorable discharge with an RE Code 3.  Shortly afterwards I sought counseling through a civilian doctor, and received treatment without the use of medication.  I was curious on how good my chances were to get this waivered for re-enlistment.  I have a letter from my civilian doctor stating that I no longer suffer from any mental disorders and that my condition is completely resolved.  I basically discovered that I was a dumb kid out of high school, and did not know what real life was.  I am a little older now and have matured a bit.  I would really like to finish what I started, do I have any hope?

Answer
Dear Chris --

It is possible to get a waiver for your RE Code 3.  But it will take hard work on your part.  Currently, with the poor economy, there are a lot of new recruits that do not need a medical or morality waiver to enlist, so now is not the best time to try to re-enlist with a waiver.

I recommend you try to re-enlist next fall during a slower time of year (basically, avoid graduation and summer after graduation periods.)  Find a recruiter that is willing to work with you to develop your enlistment package and waiver request.  Finding such a recruiter may take some time, as not all recruiters are willing to put in the time and effort needed for a waiver package.

In the meantime, if you have a job, stick with it.  If you do not have a job, volunteer work, or college level schooling will both look good in your re-enlistment package.

Please write back, if you have other questions.  Good luck to you.
