Question
My fiance is in the Navy and is stationed in Sasebo, Japan. He is not doing well there and his depression is setting back in due to the fact of being away from everything. I was wondering if there is anyway that he could be relocated to a different base in the states? If so, what might he need to do?

Answer
Jenna,
I believe you're looking at the wrong solution to his problem.  A person with Depression overseas will likely continue to be depressed stateside.

First and foremost he needs to have his depression problem fixed.  He should see a medical doctor right away.  Depression is easily treatable and may be caused by something as simple as an underactive Thyroid gland.  As long as he sees a physician and not a psychologist, there is no adverse affect to his career.

Sasebo is a beautiful place and there are lots of things to see and do there.  If his depression is treated it will make his stay there more enjoyable, despite being away from you.

Trying to move to another location is not very easily done.  There are rules and regulations and things like his rank and time already served in Japan that must be taken into consideration.

Encourage him to see a doctor as soon as possible.  It'll be better for both of you.

Best wishes,
Colonel H
