Question
I am currently in a high school sophomore and entering my junior year. I have been thinking about joining the Marine Corps for some time. But before I join I want to attended college my first choice is to get into the naval academy but I don’t know how I am suppose to get a recommendation form a congress man.  So my other choice is dong the NROTC program which will help pay for college. When I finish my four years I will like to attended law school. Can I do that with the NROTC program? But I do not want to go first in as a JAG. I will like to be able to be sniper if it is possible or if I can’t be in infantry. I would like to this for some time then I will ask for a transfer to the Jag office. Do you think this is possible or I can only do one thing? Also if I do go college how long is the commitment.  When I’m not on active duty will I be able to have a job back in the states.
Thank you for your help

Answer
Richard:

Talk to a recruiter, first of all.

Next, your high school counselor can tell you how to go about applying for the Naval Academy.

Officers are generally assigned to their respective jobs based on aptitude and needs of the service.  Lawyers are never in the field, and officers are never snipers (although they may be in charge of a group of snipers).

You'll be on active duty either six or 8 years and will be both stateside and deployed.

Go talk to a recruiter who can give you more information.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
