Question
My husband and I were both discharged last year for injuries. He had a fracture to his shoulder due to a combat accident. He has a RE of 3. He went to the VA had and orthopedic specialist write a certified letter that he has healed completely. He filled out a new sf 86 and completed all re-entry paperwork. However they are now saying that he must write a letter stating why he wants back in, well he wrote this letter and I quess a board has to approve him? How long does this normally take and what are his chances of getting back in? I want to know if I should start packing or start making other plans. Let me know if you have any knowledge of these things thanks.

Answer
Medical waivers are no quick process.  It can take a few weeks to a couple months.  There is no standard for getting them back.  The recruiting is doing so well right now that waivers are not getting done as quick now.  But hang in there, If all looks good, he has a good chance.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
