Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Adding mother-in-law as dependent

Question
My question is about how we add my mother-in-law as a dependent. My husband is an E-8 in the USMC and we just got orders back to Pendleton. During the last 2 years, my parents got divorced and just recently their construction company went bankrupt so my mother is now living alone  off of her savings with no income and having to purchase expensive prvate health insurance. To help her out, we have offered for her to move in with us when we get back to CA where she lives, Once she does move in with us, can we get her added as a dependent under my husband with medical and dental benefits? Will those benefits be the same as those for myself and our children?
Thank you.

Answer
Amanda:

This one, I'm afraid, is a little outside my area of expertise.  I *believe* (but am not sure) if the M.I.L. moves in with you, and your husband is her sole provider/custodian, then she would, in fact, qualify as a dependant family member.  However, I'm not 100 percent on this, as the rules do change on this from time to time.  She would get the same benefits if she qualifies as you and the children, however.

He should check with his CONAD for the 'final' answer as it may be different than mine.  But I believe she'll qualify.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
