QuestionI'm starting Air Force ROTC this fall and I recently heard that having custom orthotics is an automatic medical DQ. I got them because I have really flat feet (a family trait). Is this true? I went for 17 years without orthotics just fine, but a soccer injury aggravated one of my ankles so now my left ankle starts to ache if I'm on my feet too long without the orthotics. Can I get a medical waiver? Thanks for your help in advance.
AnswerDear Jaysen --
Flat feet are a disqualifying characteristic because you are more prone to increased foot, ankle and knee injuries if you have flat feet. However, you may request a waiver for this condition, and if you can prove that you are likely to succeed in training and your military mission despite your condition, the waiver may be approved.
Continue to use your orthotics to reduce your pain/likelihood of new injury, and when you are DQed at MEPS, petition for a waiver. You will likely succeed, although there are no guarantees.
Please write back it you have additional questions, or new issues arise. Good luck to you.
