Question
I had a quick question about UA/desertion charges.  Im currently a LCPL in the Marines staioned in Florida for MOS school and my best friend here is currently on his 24th day being UA.  He had some issues back home whatever they were and simply left on a friday morning.  Rumors are that because we're still student status marines and not fleet yet most punishments aren't as brutal.  He seemed to be banking on that the last few days I saw him so I just wanted to know what will ACTUALLY happen to him if he stays home the summer like he planned then goes back?

Thank you Sir much appreciated.

Answer
I wish I had a definite answer for you - but I dont know your CO's or XO's opinion on desertion. I know my opinion, but that doesnt matter. To the best of my knowledge fleet marines and student marines get treated the same, at least it was that way for me. As his friend, I urge you to tell him to come back asap. Whatever problems he had at home - he has just created a whole new set of problems by deserting. If he comes back on his own (as opposed to have someone actually have to go out and get him) he might be treated less severely. Semper Fi.
