Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Guaranteed First Duty Assignment for Army OCS

Question
Captain Shifferly,

This question is a continuation on a question answered by Rod Powers on 7/28/2006.  Mr. Powers mentions the option for Army OCS graduates to extend their obligation from 3 to 6 years, and in return they receive a guaranteed first duty assignment.  More information on this would be appreciated.

I ask because I am interested in airborne infantry and an overseas experience.  I see the 173rd ABCT in Vicenza, Italy being my best option.  However, I am told it is difficult to get.

Thanks for your time in advance,
Mark

Answer
They may offer you this option, based on their needs and you can take it. However, you'll still be hard-pressed to get Italy as it is, indeed, a high demand assignment. What you'll do is sign a contract agreeing to an Active Duty Service Obligation (ADSO) in addition to whatever other ADSOs you have should you be granted your choice of duty assignment. They will offer you that during either OCS or BOLC should it be available to your class. It really depends on timing, and luck. Hope you get what you want.

Expertise

I am currently an active duty Army Captain in the Military Police Field. I have been enlisted (Military Intelligence) and attended The United States Military Academy at West Point. I can answer questions related to the Army, posting, jobs, lifestyle, workings... pretty much anything you can throw at me with the exception of very specific recruting or medical questions. I have no expertise in what it takes to get in the military other than the fact that I, myself, joined at one point in time.

Experience

I have experience in both deployed and garrision environments as a Military Police Officer.

Education/Credentials
Bachelor of Science in Arabic and French from United States Military Academy at West Point.
