QuestionI recently graduated with a Masters of Counselor Education... throughout my searches on this topic joining the military I notice most enter still trying to obtain their Masters or get assistance in completing their bachelors. What types of careers are there in the military where I'd be able to utilize my degree...and get rewarded financially for having one? Would I have to modify my interest?
AnswerDear Akosua --
Unfortunately a Masters in Education is not one of the sought after degrees needed by the military. During your enlistment, it will count no more than a successful bachelors degree. However, that does mean that if your degree is from an accredited US university or college that you are likely eligible for officer candidate school (OCS). You will also have to do well on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and pass the physical and morality screenings.
If you enlist without the OCS rider, you could be eligible for monetary enlistment bonuses depending on whether you choose a military occupational specialty that needs recruits.
Your degree will likely help you as an officer, since a large portion of your responsibility will be to ensure your subordinates are properly trained in their fields.
Fields where advanced degrees make a difference at enlistment are medical, legal and the Chaplains Corps. Other advanced degrees have little effect on a career until the board for officer level 4 (major in the Army) where an advanced degree is desired but not required for promotion.
