Question
I have wanted to join the Coast Guard for years now. I was wondering if a laproscopic surgery would DQ me? I had one done yesterday and had a cyst removed along with two other things. Thank you for your time!

Answer
Bethany,
Congratulations on a successful (I'm assuming) surgery.  Your answer all depends upon what the surgery was for and what was removed during the surgery.  A simple removal of a cyst is normally not a problem, unless it was for a hepatic cyst of the liver which may indicate liver disease.  But if, for example, if you also had your gall bladder, pancreas, or spleen removed then yes, it would disqualify you.

The military is looking for anything which may become a medical problem in the future that may cost them a lot of money to treat you.

Even should you be disqualified, your health is more important than your job.

Your letter is marked "public" and not "private" so be careful if you have any follow-up questions for me.  Your health is nobody else's business.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery,
Colonel H
