Question
I am interested in joining the military, and would like to serve directly in the war (not join the army just to wear my uniform to a desk job). However, I am a girl and even though I have good stats for the pt test, I am only 100 pounds and do not often lift weights. I have two years to train, but was wondering what my chances are of serving in Iraq or Afghanistan in a close to combat role. Also, do you think my chances would be better or worse in the marines? Thank you for your time, and I greatly respect your service to this country.

Answer
OK. I am not sure about the Marines for job stuff, but if you honestly want to deploy then the Army is the place to be. Military Police would be a great choice as they are gender immaterial and would give you both combat and practical training. Your PT will come during basic training where they will ensure you have daily workouts and that you can meet the Army standard. Just ensure you are serious about the commitment it takes to enlist before you do so and, once you're ready, take it one day at a time. You'll do fine.

Expertise

I am currently an active duty Army Captain in the Military Police Field. I have been enlisted (Military Intelligence) and attended The United States Military Academy at West Point. I can answer questions related to the Army, posting, jobs, lifestyle, workings... pretty much anything you can throw at me with the exception of very specific recruting or medical questions. I have no expertise in what it takes to get in the military other than the fact that I, myself, joined at one point in time.

Experience

I have experience in both deployed and garrision environments as a Military Police Officer.

Education/Credentials
Bachelor of Science in Arabic and French from United States Military Academy at West Point.
