QuestionColonel Bedell,
"I am 32 years old and have served for roughly 8 years in the enlisted ranks, 5 in the Navy and 2 in the Army National Guard. I recently enlisted in the Air Force Guard as in the field of Satellite communications. I enjoy being in the service and would like to continue as a "weekend warrior".
I am working towards a degree in business management and am highly interested in a commission in the Air Guard. I read that the cut off age is 35. I am quickly approaching this dead line so have considered attending and accredited adult university, University of Redlands, Chapman University, Azusa Pacific etc.
My questions for you are: Will the Air Force consider this degree form one of these institutions? If I don't get in before the age of 35 are there age waivers? Do you have any advise on acomplishing this goal? Where may I find more information regarding this subject?
I am enjoying the treatment in the Air Guard I also liked the Navy and would consider becomming an officer in either service.
Your help is greatly appreciated"
AnswerDear Julian --
As long as your degree is from an accredited University or College in the United States, it meets the educational requirements for commissioning. You must also meet the other standards established by your branch of service in order to attend officer candidate school or officer training school.
If you will be older than 35 when you complete OCS or OTS, you can request an age waiver in your application packet. If you are otherwise qualified, and have good leadership recommendations from your chain of command, your waiver application is likely to be approved.
Good luck to you. Thank you for your service.
