Question
i am 31 years old and holding a g.e.d., i would like to enlist in the coast guard. i realize this puts my behind the mark, i also just had a minor shoulder surgery. i am in great shape and know i can handle all the physical requirements to get in. is there a chance for me and the coast guard?
thank you.

Answer
Dear Charles --

You will need a medical waiver for your shoulder surgery, and that greatly reduces your chances of successfully enlisting.  Since you have your GED, you have high school equivalency, although as you stated, the GED will not give you as many quality points as a high school diploma would give you.

The Coast Guard is a relatively small service and so can be very selective on who they recruit.  You will have to do very well on your Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) to interest your recruiter to help you with the waivers you will need.

Please write back, if you have additional questions.  Good luck to you.
