Question
This is my first time on this site, but I am hoping someone can give me the answers I am looking for. My situation is that 2 years ago when I enlisted in the army, I failed the urine test for marijuana at MEPS. Yes it was a huge mistake, I know. Anyway, I originally enlisted as a 25U, which requires a clearance. I basically had to wait 45 days to take another test, which I passed, and I had to re-class to another MOS. I have now been in for 2 years and I've been doing the right thing and gotten promoted from E-1 to E-4 already. So what I am wondering is how can this stupid mistake affect me later down the road, if I decide to make this a 20+ year career. I eventually want to do something high speed, such as go to ranger school or become a warrant officer, but I don't know if it's possible. I have no prior arrests or anything negative on my record, not even a speeding ticket. Anyway if anyone can help me, I will greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your time.

Answer
It shouldn't have affected your current enlistment. You should be ok as long as you're honest on your EQUIP (security clearance questionnaire) .. your current streak of being a good Soldier will go a long ways in your favor. Your career options should not be limited by a mistake that happened before you really were in the military. Just continue to be a good Soldier and your options should continue to multiply.

Expertise

I am currently an active duty Army Captain in the Military Police Field. I have been enlisted (Military Intelligence) and attended The United States Military Academy at West Point. I can answer questions related to the Army, posting, jobs, lifestyle, workings... pretty much anything you can throw at me with the exception of very specific recruting or medical questions. I have no expertise in what it takes to get in the military other than the fact that I, myself, joined at one point in time.

Experience

I have experience in both deployed and garrision environments as a Military Police Officer.

Education/Credentials
Bachelor of Science in Arabic and French from United States Military Academy at West Point.
