Question
I am an officer (2LT) in the active duty Army and my future husband (wedding is Dec 31!) is an aviator (1LT) in the Army National Guard. We were both commissioned by the same source, but him to the NG and myself to the RA.

He is wanting to switch from National Guard to Active Duty in order to be stationed with me and pursue a career as an Active Duty Pilot, however he is running into many issues, particularly because he is an officer. We've done a lot of research but there is no Military Couples Program unless both members are active duty. Should it be this difficult? Is there something we are missing? Please let me know if you know of a way for us to be together.

Thank you.

Answer
As a guard member, he can transfer to the state that you are in for AD.  It is done all the time.  he can try to get released to AD, but is really hard right now, but he has good reasons.

But the Guard allows it members to transfer to other states for job moves etc.  So he would just have to find a unit in whatever state you go to that fits his needs.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
