Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Reenlistment code

Question
I'm currently 34 and I was medically discharged from the Army in 1998 due to knees and shins. My separation code is JFL and my reenlistment code is 3. I'm interested in joining the Air Force Reserves and the recruiter I spoke with over the phone said that I could not with these codes. I would have to file a DD 215 and get the code changed. I did receive a small amount of money when I left the Army.

According to what I have read, I can join with a waiver. Do you know what I will have to do to get the waiver? I would like a solid answer before I give up hope. SO far I see that there is still a chance.

Thank you,

Marq

Answer
Marq,
Don't see the recruiter you talked to on the phone, he doesn't know what he's talking about.
A DD Form 215 is used to correct errors or additions to a DD Form 214 discovered after the original is already done.  This is not the form you need.  You don't need to correct old records, you just need to join despite an old problem.

A Separation code of JFL means exactly, "Physical disability. Entitled to severance pay."
A Re-Entry code of 3 means exactly, "Individuals who are not qualified for continued Army service, but the disqualification is waiverable.  Ineligible for re-enlistment unless a waiver is granted."

So you need to talk to a smarter AF Reserve recruiter.  He will process a waiver for you.  In this package it helps to have a letter from your doctor (or preferably from a VA doctor if eligible) saying you're OK now and your medical problems have been corrected.

Go to the website:  http://afreserve.com/  Here you can find another recruiter or chat with one about your specifics.

Do it soon, because the age limit is 34.

No need to give up hope, you have a good chance.

Let me know sometime how it goes for you.  I like to hear success stories.
Thanks for having served and wanting to continue serving.
Colonel H
