Question
QUESTION: I was told that you can switch branches in the military if you complete your contracts is this true.

ANSWER: Marcheal,
Yes, however, "switching" is not an accurate way of stating what really happens.

After you have fulfilled your contract with a Branch of the Service you are free to go.  So what actually takes place is you are discharged from one Branch and then enlist in another Branch.  There's nothing magical about it.  It usually just happens so fast that it seems like you're wearing a green uniform one day and a white uniform the next day (for example).

You said it correctly when you said "complete your contracts."  You basically can't do anything until you complete that contract.
There are only a few rare exceptions.

QUESTION: If I do switch branches will my rank and will I keep getting money from the other branch or will all that end.

Answer
Marcheal,
There are a lot of details particular to your case that will determine that answer.  Generally when you leave on Branch for another you'll lose one stripe, but not lower than E-3.  It also depends upon what career field you're in and do you want to remain in it or try something else.  If you stay in the same career you may get to keep your same rank because you're already trained.  If you change career fields you will most likely be reduced one rank.  Either way you will NOT have to complete Basic Training all over again.

Regardless of which Branch you are in, your pay comes from the Department of Defense, so your pay goes on just the same as always.
