Question
My boyfriend has taken the practice test and since he did poorly he was told to study the ASAVB for Dummies book.  He is a foreigner (he is a permanent resident) but his English is very limited.  While studying, are there any extra thing he could be studying for the English vocab?  While taking the practice test he didn't understand the questions.  Any advice for foreigners would be helpful.  Thanks!

Answer
The ASVAB AFQT score is comprised from four of the nine ASVAB subtests: Paragraph Comprehension, Word Knowledge, Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge.

Your boyfriend will have to concentrate his study efforts on Word Knowledge (vocabulary), and paragraph comprehension (reading comprehension). He may wish to consider taking a few English as a Second Language courses, or possibly some vocabulary and reading courses at a local college.

I have a new book coming out, "ASVAB AFQT For Dummies," that may help, but it won't be out until December.
