Question
QUESTION: My nephew is supposed to leave for Marine boot camp Oct. 19th.  He did have a DUI in April and his recruiter was informed at that time and that is why his entry date from April was pushed back to October. He instructed him and his Dad upon what they had to do.
He did fulfil all his legal obligations and just got his license back.  Just this past Friday his recruiter said now with the DUI on his record he can't go now due to some new ruling that took place in July--which they never informed him of.  Is this true?  Is there anyone we can contact.  Thank You!

ANSWER: Lori:

Ask the recruiter to provide the EXACT ruling he/she is talking about.  If they cannot, ask to speak to the station NCOIC to find out what is going on, and get an explaination.  I'm unaware of any such ruling, as long as the waiver paperwork has been done.  It could be some sort of local policy.  Either way, ask for the policy in writing so you know for sure.

QUESTION: We were told that this was not a deal breaker and that everything had been done.  Everything was cleared.  The ruling was provided to us that there could not be any DUI on his record.  Now they said it became effective June 1st that it could not show on his record.  He should honor what they told him as he is devasted. Is there anything or anyone we can get help from.

Answer
Ok, WHAT exactly is the order or regulation.  Without knowing what it is I can't research or give any further help I'm afraid.  One would think that if his occured prior to that order coming down it wouldn't be an issue.  However, if the conviction shows on the record AFTER June (his court date is when it would show up) then I could see what they are talking about.

I need to know if this is a local policy or a Marine Corps wide order.  Ask for the reference.  That will help me help you if I can.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
