QuestionI am currently finishing my sleep technology program at a community college. I plan on attending school, and graduating as a Doctor of Neurology. I saw a previous posting that said that only "true doctors" can get an early promotion. My question is what position do they receive when they apply? Am I able to go straight to Captain, or do I still need to start as a Lieutenant? Thanks in advance.
AnswerDear Rocky --
You must be a board certified medical doctor to enter the military services with a direct commission, or you must have other unique credentials that the military needs and cannot recruit.
If you will graduate as a doctor of medicine, and can receive state issued board certification, you should be able to receive a direct commission as a captain, if you are otherwise mentally, physically and morally qualified to serve.
If you will graduate with a Ph.D. you might qualify for a direct commission, if the military has needs of your skills. If you do not have professional credentials, and significant experience in your field, you might qualify for accelerated promotions, but you might not. Opportunities will depend on the military's needs for your skills and education.
If you will be an MD or a Ph.D. in a medical field, you should speak to an Army Medical Department (AMEDD) recruiter not a standard recruiter. An AMEDD recruiter will know the special programs available to someone with your training and education. Once you have a bachelors degree, you should speak to an AMEDD recruiter to see if you qualify for their medical school or Ph.D scholarship programs. You might be able to get your education for free, and start military service as a captain.
Good luck to you.
