Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/assignment preference

Question
Hi, I was just wondering about the assignment preference. My husband is in basic training still...so I'm getting a little ahead of myself, but I'm curious. Do we get to choose from certain bases based on his job or can we suggest any army base in the united states? I'm applying for pharmacy school and I'd like for us to live close to school and the base he's stationed at. For instance, if he's in logistics could we ask to be stationed at Fort Meade in Maryland? Or will they tell us what bases he can go to and we pick which ones we prefer?

Answer
If he doesn't have a base written into his contract, he will be assigned at the needs of the army. He will get no choice in this matter. They will simply give him a set of orders with where he's going on it during his AIT portion. Each base has a requirement for different amounts of a particular job, so it honestly depends on how many of whatever job your husband has are needed when his time comes to get a base. Sorry for being vague, but it is pretty difficult to give you any solid answers about that without knowing his MOS and his contract status.

Expertise

I am currently an active duty Army Captain in the Military Police Field. I have been enlisted (Military Intelligence) and attended The United States Military Academy at West Point. I can answer questions related to the Army, posting, jobs, lifestyle, workings... pretty much anything you can throw at me with the exception of very specific recruting or medical questions. I have no expertise in what it takes to get in the military other than the fact that I, myself, joined at one point in time.

Experience

I have experience in both deployed and garrision environments as a Military Police Officer.

Education/Credentials
Bachelor of Science in Arabic and French from United States Military Academy at West Point.
