Question
Hello Maam,

I am a SGT in the Texas Army National Guard and is slotted to attend OCS,BOLC II, and OBC starting Jan. 2010. The problem is that I left active duty Navy after 5 years in Jan, 2009 and have been unable to find a job to support my family. When I go on active duty for training in Jan. I will like to stay on active duty if possible. Will I be able to start that process while on AD or when I finished all of my training? I love the Guard but I need a full time check and benefits for the family. And if accepted will I be able to keep my commission as a 2lt or back to a E-5? Thanks

Answer
Dear Terry --

When you are close to graduation from your OBC, you can request orders for an active duty tour.  If you receive these orders, you will serve as an officer, at whatever rank you hold at that time.

If you do not get active duties orders and instead return to your unit as a lieutenant, you can still request activation.  It may take a while for your branch to find you a suitable assignment.

Please write back, if you have additional questions.  Good luck to you.  Thank you for your service.
