Question
Mr. Powers,

I am currently going through the enlistment process with the navy for special warfare/seals, but I have a dui conviction from march 2006. I just talked to an army recruiter and he said that i cannot get a security clearance with my dui for special forces/green berets right off the bat. The navy recruiter said i would be offered $25,000 signing bonus and a guaranteed shot at BUD/S after basic training. Is it true that a my 3.5 year old dui conviction will disqualify me from a security clearance? Will this affect my navy seal contract?

Answer
Hi Sam,

No, it's not true (see my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/generalinfo/a/security.htm), however, the Army is doing so well on their recruiting goals right now, that they aren't approving any criminal history waivers, at all (for any job).

Hope this helps!
