Question
Hello,   I’m extremely interested in joining the USAF, what I want to be is a Pararescueman, however, I have just filed bankruptcy- (was my last choice) but have been in the process of doing so for a while, I currently have no problems keeping up with my bills and finical needs. Is that going to disqualify me? Other than that there is not anything holding me back for joining?

Answer
Josh,
Wow, you've selected THE hardest training program in the AF.  Hopefully you're in great shape.  If you are I envy you.  PJs are the AF equivalent of the Navy's SEALs.  When I have to eject from an airplane, I'm putting my life in the hands of a PJ for rescue, so they HAVE to be in great shape.

The AF only looks at the date your bankruptcy became final, regardless of how long it's been in the process.  The longer it has been since your bankruptcy the better your chances of being accepted because you're showing financial responsibility since that time.  Your question leads me to believe your bankruptcy is very recent, in which case your chances of acceptance are lower, but still do-able.

When you talk to the recruiter...when the subject comes up, try and downplay it as much as possible, like its no big deal.  If by chance he doesn't mention it, then don't volunteer that information.

Overall I'd say your chances are pretty good.
Lots of luck.
Colonel Howell
