Question
Good evening Sir. A girl i know has been working towards a career in the Air Force and has been in the delayed entry program for some months now. She was staying with her family then unfortunately things turned abusive so she was forced to leave for her own safety. Now where the problem lies is, she has 4 months until she ships for Basic Training and has no where to stay (We have tryed some of the long term shelters and they are either full or will not take her because she's not in "immediate danger".). I live in Canada and have the extra room for her to stay with me and can provide transport to and from her D.E.P meetings, but our concern is she will be disqualified from entry by staying here in Canada. Are these concerns valid or could she stay with me for the temporary time until she ships off?

Thank you.

Answer
Rose,
It's very nice of you to be concerned for, and helping, a friend.

She may stay anywhere she likes until she ships out, but she cannot use your address as her "Home of Residence" on her entry paperwork.  She must declare a U.S. address.  This address will follow her throughout her career as her official "home at time of entry".  It also determines which state tax. if any, will be withheld from her monthly pay.

If she happens to have a friend living in a tax free state such as AK, FL, NV, SD, WA, WY, or TX that will allow her to use their address, her pay will be free from state tax.

I'm sure her life will be better in the AF.
