Question
Hi, my name is Alysia. My boyfriend has just been sworn into the navy recently and is leaving for training July 18, 2011, after high school. I'm still in high school, but I was wondering when he is done at A-school, and I'm done high school, would I be able to move in with him on-base or off-base if were not married or do we have to be married in order to live together?
If you could get back to me it would be greatly appreciated for your answer.
Sincerely,
      Alysia

Answer
Alysia,
The Navy will not recognize you as a legal dependent until you present your marriage certificate to the personnel office.

While he's single he'll be required to live in a dormitory on base until he reaches the higher rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class (E-4#.  Then he may live off base if he wished.

If you are married, you may live together off-base or apply for a house on base.  If you live off-base, he will be given extra pay to help pay the rent.  It varies from city to city, and usually is not enough to pay the full rent.

Of you live on-base, he will not receive that extra pay, but your house will be provided rent free.  All you pay is the utilities.

Once you are a legal dependent #married) that entitles you to use all the facilities on base...the NAVEX, commissary, library, all recreational facilities, and free healthcare.

I wish you well.
Colonel H
