Question
Mr. Howell,
I am an active duty soldier(E4), I came into the army as
an E4 because of my degree, but could not come in a a direct
commission officer as I was not a citizen at that time, I am
a citizen now. Since the army OCS does not give you the
liberty to choose what you would like to do. I am engineer
and wish to do something in the same in the army, I have
heard about the Aerospace Engineer Duty Ofiicers, am I
eligible for that? I still have 3 years before my contract
ends. Also I would like to explore options of working as an
engineer for the army. AMRDEC is also something I am
interested in but I am unable to get information about how I
can go about achieving my goals.

I look forward to a response from you.
Thank you,
Chintan Mehta

Answer
Chintan,

AMRDEC is probably your best option right now.  The Directorate of Aviation Engineering is the Airworthiness authority for Army-developed aircraft, mostly helicopters.  They do development and testing of airframe materials, weapons systems, avionics, cockpit systems, navigation systems, and more.

You need to contact them directly at:
AMSRD-AMR-AE
Bldg. 5400
Redstone Arsenal, AL 35898
Phone: 256-313-8403

Or via e-mail at:  aed@amrdec.army.mil

They can guide you through the process.
