Question
I am in a TPU and have been diagnosed with severe proctitis. I have most of the symptoms listed in 40-501 that requires an MEB except I haven't been hospitalized. I do not want to be medically discharged, but after my annual physical, I was put on a permanent profile with PULHES of 311121 and listed as non-deployable. I have 13 years in, MOSQ 35D. I have never missed any work, and have passed all my APFTs. My condition is improving, but I am not in remission after 11 months of treatment. What are my chances that I will be able to stay in and retire? What can I do to increase my chances prior to the MEB? Thank you in advance for your response.

Answer
Luke,
I'm sorry you have to have the pain and discomfort of Proctitis.  I can't imagine you'd face a MEB just because of it.  Mostly because many people experience long remissions, even without medication.  Proctitis may sometimes mysteriously resolve itself ("burn out") after a long history of symptoms.

Having said that, strange things have happened at MEBs.  Sometimes I wonder if they really are physicians.

I'd like to say you shouldn't have any problem, but I'm not in charge there.  You may indeed have to fight for a waiver to remain in your MOS, but that should be your only fight.

I wish you well and thanks for your service.
Colonel H
