Question
I am a retired USN Senior Chief and the founder of Gulf Coast Oxford House for Veterans.  I am currently working with a man who was honorably discharged from the USA then went to prison for drug related crimes.  While in prison, his GI bill expired.  Since he could not physically use his GI bill due to incarceration, any suggestion on how to get him reinstated?  I wanted some advice before I took on the VA and tried to surmount the endless circle of rejections and overdue responses.  Thanks in advance.  Res

Answer
I know that every service member has 10 years to utilize the GI bill after which it expires. I am almost willing to be dollars to doughnuts that the VA will deny his GI bill extension due to his incarceration. For instance if a retired service member is sent to prison, they loose their retirement benefits.  I am not saying that he hasn't been rehabilitated and is ready to take on life, but they are going to look at the fact that he had his chance to use it before he was convicted.    The only thing that I can suggest is to submit the paperwork anyway and see what happens.

If you think that you cant handle the answer that I give you, then don't ask the question...... If you are planning on joining the military, your number 1 decision factor in making this kind of move is that you need to be more concerned about serving your country than your country serving you!! All the benefits are the best that you can find. Education is at a premium right now and its the most rewarding thing that you can do.
