Question
I am interested in the Reserves for a few different reasons but am unsure if a medical condition I have will disqualify me from acceptance into the reserves.  I have a hypothyroid condition that is controlled by a low dose of thyroid meds.  From what I have been able to find on the internet this is not a disqualifier for any branch of the military as long as it is controlled by meds. However, in this day and age where every branch is meeting there recruiting requirements what are the chances of getting a waiver for this condition. I could stop taking my medication but am worried of my low thyroid levels showing up in a blood test during my physical. Do I have chance or should I kiss this dream goodbye?

Answer
if you are taking any meds to cntrol anything but allergies, you cannot join.  In combat, medications may not be available if cutoff.

Ypu can apply for a waiver, but usually do not get it for taking neds.  Once you are in and issued meds for a problem that develops while on duty is different and allowed.  They dont like taking people who are not issue free.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
