Question
QUESTION: My son was in bootcamp and didn't qualify with the rifle.  He recieved a re-3f in September 2009.  After leaving bootcamp he has worked on his marksmanship and has improved greatly.  He would like another chance with the Marines.  What are his chances and what could he do to improve his chances?

ANSWER: Betty:

Realistically, 'zero and none' at this point.  My suggestion is to try the Army or National Guard.

QUESTION: Hi Jason--

Thanks for the prompt and honest answer.  That's what I thought.  A few more questions if I may.  How will his re-3f from the Marines affect his chances of getting in the Army?  Does the Army use the same classifications as the Marines?  What makes getting into the Army possible with a re-3f since it's basically impossible with the Marines?

Answer
Betty:

The services have different guidelines and qualifications.  The army is easier on certain things, and this will be one of them.  The idea behind it is that if someone failed out once in a certain service (the 3F), they might still be acceptable to another service since the qualifications and requirements are different for them.    It's certainly worth a try, the  worst they can say is 'no'.

He'll need a waiver to enlist, which has to be approved at the district recruiting level, and possibly higher.  But it's still worth trying.

  Best of luck!

Jason

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
