Question
My son called today from navey boot camp where he has been for 4 weeek. He informed us that he was being given a medical discharge because of an injury to his shoulder. He was told that it would need to be surgicly corrected. He said he would be homein about two weeks. My question to you is who covers the surgery and the therapy afterwards. Will he come home with no insurance. Is there any information we should be getting or questions we should be asking . Also keep in mind he had surgery on this same shoulder 3 years efore he went into the Navey but they of course were aware of this.

Answer
If the navy was aware of this, it was a pre existing condition and may not cover it.  If it is determined to be because of training not related to previous issues, he will have records and documents of how to get it taken care of at the VA hospital. He needs to ask these questions before he is discharged.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
