Question
Hello! I am a high school student in Pennsylvania interested in joining the US Army as an officer after high school through ROTC. The problem is that I am not a US citizen yet. I have a Green Card and I've been in the US for 2 years now but I will not receive the citizenship until my sophomore year in college. I am finishing my sophomore year in HS now.I read that there is the Split Option Training program in the Army National Guard. If I join the PA ANG when I turn 17, about 6 months from now and got to BCT the following summer, will the NG help me get my citizenship faster, before i finish High School? OR Will I be able to apply to the US Military Academy Preparatory School if I am a NG soldier and later attend West Point? Is it possible to join ROTC after HS while I am in the NG? I am an excellent student, boxing champion in Europe and I'm fluent in 3 foreign languages. Thank You in advance!

Answer
There are progams that help soldiers get their citizenship faster, but you can wait to cintract as a commisioning cadet after you get your citizenship while in college as well and still be eligible.

you are not able to get your citizenship as a minor, your parents can, which will blanket you as well.  Unless you are a top student in your school, an appointment to an academy probably isn't realistic for you.

If you are a Guard soldier, you can get to a prep school when a citizen, but would be discharged from the guard to do so.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
