Question
I am currently in the air force and have self-diagnosed myself with a gluten intolerance/celiac disease.  I am currently on a gluten free diet and am feeling better. I want to go see the doc about this to get the actual tests and confirm or deny this intolerance but I am worried it would result in a medical discharge or would put me on a waiver and prevent me from reenlisting in the future.  I was unaware or didn't have this problem before I joined the air force, so I did not lie when I enlisted.  I live off base so I currently can provide myself with the proper food to support this diet but if I have to deploy or go TDY somewhere then I am worried it would add complications again.

Answer
With the way that the chow halls are now a days in deployed locations, there is a variety of foods that you can eat that either are gluten free or damn close to it. If you live off base and can take care of this issue your self, I for one wouldn't shoot myself in the food it at all possible. The Air Force is looking for reasons to eliminate folks. More than likely the DOCs will tell you to do what you are already doing. Sounds to me like you have it under control. I would further educate my self in what foods to eat in deployed locations. Course on the flip side to that if it continues to get worse seek medical attention.

All in All, I believe that you have a good grasp of your situation. Closely monitor it and dont make waves unless its fully warranted.

If you think that you cant handle the answer that I give you, then don't ask the question...... If you are planning on joining the military, your number 1 decision factor in making this kind of move is that you need to be more concerned about serving your country than your country serving you!! All the benefits are the best that you can find. Education is at a premium right now and its the most rewarding thing that you can do. If I dont answer right away probably means that I am busy, but have patience, I will get to you.
