Hi,
Me and my friend are having a disagreement. My husband and I are stationed in Okinawa, he is Navy. My friend says that that if we buy a Japanese car from Okinawa that the government will pay for it to be shipped home free of charge. He also seems to think that they do not have to be converted to US standards. I disagree. Can you please help us out? Thank you!

Friends often mean well but are usually wrong.  In this case your friend is mostly correct.

Check with your local NAVEX or AAFES for the specific details on the car you want.  Buying this way can save a lot in taxes but the conversion costs may offset that savings.  Some car brands will sell you a car already meeting U.S. safety %26 emission standards so you don't have to have then converted later.  It's a good deal.
