Question
"From start to finish," if there is no board involved, how long does the process take for an Chapter 5-17? My son (Army) Is suffering from panic attacks and PTSD. He had tried to committ suicide about 3 weeks ago and was admitted to the hospital. His 5-17 paperwork was approved by the DR and picked up by his SGT on friday. This morning they had him at the hospital doing blood draws, vision test and vitals. After that is done do you know what the time frame is until I can get him home? I am so worried about him. Any information would be greatly appreciated."

Answer
I'm sorry to say that there is no set timeline with any separation.  The final separation authority for a 5-17 is the first Colonel  (O6) in his chain of command. That's typically about 3 levels of bureaucracy between your son and the separation authority.  Along the way each level will want a legal review to ensure all documents and statements are in order. The time can vary based on the amount of legal review/paperwork there is and how his unit is proceeding (ie do they think he's faking it or do they want him gone quick).  A good guess timeframe would be about 6 weeks, but that's all it is: a guess..  Sorry I can't be more definitive.

Expertise

I am currently an active duty Army Captain in the Military Police Field. I have been enlisted (Military Intelligence) and attended The United States Military Academy at West Point. I can answer questions related to the Army, posting, jobs, lifestyle, workings... pretty much anything you can throw at me with the exception of very specific recruting or medical questions. I have no expertise in what it takes to get in the military other than the fact that I, myself, joined at one point in time.

Experience

I have experience in both deployed and garrision environments as a Military Police Officer.

Education/Credentials
Bachelor of Science in Arabic and French from United States Military Academy at West Point.
