Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Military Service Obligation

Question
I enlisted in the Army under DEP in October 1989.  I completed my MSO with a combination of active duty and national guard time in 1997.

After a break in service of 12 years, in 2009 I was selected as a Direct Commission Officer in the Navy Reserve, and I commissioned in March 2010.  My question is about the Military Service Obligation.

I am still adjusting to training and the Navy was of doing business.  It is much different than in the Army, especially with the transition from enlisted to officer.

I want to give it a fair shake, but if I find that the Navy Reserve is not for me, do I have a new military service obligation to fulfill?  How do I get out?  My date for pay has been adjusted to October 9, 2002.

How long am I obligated to drill for before I can put in request to transfer to IRR?

Answer
To be honest, I do not know.  You do not have an MSO as that is enlisted only.  You can resign your commission from the reserves I believe, but not sure what kind of contract the navy reserves officer have you fulfill.  You would have to speak to your CO about that one, sorry.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
