Question
I haven't been able to find a consistent outlook on this subject. I am in the DEP in the Marines waiting to go to basic, and my boyfriend is in the National Guard wanting to go active Army. We know it's going to be extremely difficult to make anything work, but we want to try anyway. What are the chances that we could get based near each other if we married? And if we did get stationed an hour away from each other, can we live that far off base and would we still get benefits for being married? Would our chances be higher of getting near each other if he stayed in the National Guard rather than going active duty? Thank you for any information you can give me. We know it's going to be really hard, but we want to at least try.

Answer
Jordan,
Don't let anything stand in the way of love!  Stay together as long as you can.

If you both were active duty it would be nearly impossible.  Since you're the active duty member, your boyfriend will have to follow you around wherever you're assigned and then join the ANG unit there.  It's very easy.  Since he wants to go active duty (which is very difficult to do) your chances are slim.  Each Service would do their best to station you together if you were both in the same Service.  When you split Services like that, there's not much they can do.  The Marines seldom have camps near an Army post.  That's done on purpose, as part of the defense of the U.S.  You don't want warriors all bunched together, they're spread all across the nation.
