Question
John,

Good afternoon. I hope that all is going well. Again, my name is Rodney and I'm, of course, here to ask a question pertaining to RE-4 codes and my situation.

Short Story: 8 years ago I was discharged for medical condition of Sickle cell trait (Not full blown sickle cell disease). Regulations stated anything above 45% hemoglobin S could be discharged if a waiver wasn't initially granted before enlistment (At the time, I was unaware of the condition and never had any issues). My percentage was documented at being 48%. I was discharge with ELS, JFW, RE-4. I've spoken with my health care provider who states that these percentages don't fluctuate/change due to age, exercise, or diets. Only when medication is involved. Fortunately, I've never been prescribed any medication for the trait then or now.

Same blood tests, hemoglobin electrophoresis, have been conducted approximately 2 months ago. Below are my results compared to that of the Navy:

NAVY: Hgb S - 48.3%
RECENT TESTS: Hgb S - 27% and Variant 38.9%. 21% off the mark of what was provided in my medical record.

I've now been able to obtain a degree and wish to enlist into the Armed Forces as an Officer. I haven't spoken with a recruiter because I'm afraid of being told different things but, on the other hand, it couldn't hurt. How should I approach this situation? My apologies for extending this message. Just looking for some answers. Looking forward to the conversation. Thanks in advance.

Respectfully,

Rodney

Answer
An RE4 pretty much bans you from rejoining the military.  You can petetion to get it changed by going here:  http://www.donhq.navy.mil/bcnr/bcnr.htm

If they change your RE cide, then you may be able to request a waiver.  Some services will look at RE4 dependingont the seperation code.  The Army or national Guard will not, I doubt for the Air Force, but it doesnt hurt to find out.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
