Question
I am in possession of my grandfathers discharge papers and a panoramic photo of his company.  I'm trying to find out a bit more about the company and his service.  The discharge papers identifies the unit as 505 MTC, 422 Supply.  The photo includes the commanding officer's name and the photographers who took the picture - they appear to be in Jacksonville as the photographers are listed as Coles and Sternberg No 6 Jax.  I'm trying to see if I can flesh out a bit about the company, it's deployment and possibly his service.  Family lore states he may have been a chauffeur but I think that may only be because that is listed on his enlistment record under "knowledge of any vocation".  His rank was listed as Appd Corporal.  I guess I just would like to know where I may gather more information.

Answer
John,
The Appd Corporal means "Appointed Corporal", the old expression meaning "Promoted to the rank of Corporal".

Your best bet is to request your grandfather's records from the National Personnel Records Center
in St. Louis.  Instructions are at:  http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/

After you receive the records, if you find anything such as acronyms that you don't understand, ask at one of your local veteran's organizations like the American Legion, VFW, or DAV.  They're always more than willing to give you information.
