Question
Dr. Howell,

I have always wanted to join the Marines, and came close to doing so recently. I began processing with my local Officer Selection Team, but was pre-screened and dismissed for a peanut allergy. The OST had encouraged me to sign releases and waiver applications for my history of mild asthma (for which I have not filled a prescription in about 19 months), marijuana use (they insisted that being near marijuana users constituted secondhand exposure and needed a waiver), and had documented what they perceived to be a "criminal record" (two speeding tickets).

Feeling like the OST had misunderstood my medical history, I decided to visit an enlisted recruiter and not mention these minor issues that I felt were exaggerated by the OST. I processed and was deemed fit for service, but while awaiting my dismissal, my old OST recruiter happened to see me and recognize me. She proceeded to go to MEPS and see to my disqualification. I was told later by my enlisted recruiter that I was considered "morally and physically fit for service", but was "miscellaneously DQ'd". I do not know the contents of my file, as my enlisted recruiter told me he didn't have access (which I doubt based on his demeanor).

My question for you is, based on the above circumstances, how likely is it that I can process elsewhere for either the Marines or the Army? I know the Army is somewhat more forgiving when it comes to waivers, so I assume my chances would be greater with them. How should I explain this to a future recruiter, and overall, how can I live my dream of serving my country?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Answer
Kegan,
I forgot to mention that it will be very easy for you to avoid the foods you shouldn't have.  Nobody will ever make you eat anything you don't want.  All means are basically cafeteria style, (even when deployed) so you can simply select whatever you wish to eat.
