Question
My son who is graduating had planned on enlisting n the national guard to help pay for school he previously went to meps but was told that he had to be off his medication which was adderall for one year before he would be able 2 enlist, when I spoke to his recruiter a couple of days ago an told him I have a letter from his dr. Stating he has been off this medication since December of 2009, I was told that as of a couple of days ago that the letter would also need to state he was on the medication for less than 24 months, but if u look back he was on it for a total of 36 months so I have not called the recruiter back yet worried that now the guard or college will not be an option, if u have any info on this subject that might b helpful please let me know thank u so much for your time an knowledge!

Answer
It is not up to the recruiter to decide this, it is up to the MEPs Doctor.  Submit the documentaion as is, if he is disqualified, a medical waiver can be submitted.  Our Dr's know that kids are overly prescribed medication.  They look at over all notes and make decisions.

That is the only thing you can and should do.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
