Question
I have a question about the HPSP program, but more generally all branches as they relate to healthcare professionals. I am currently a bachelor degree prepared RN. I work in home health and my patients are predominantly  veterans; I love them. I am starting my doctorate program that will lead to licensure as a family nurse practitioner and psychiatric nurse practitioner. While researching scholarships for my educations, I ran across the HSPS program. What a fabulous program for health professions. Of course, I have a couple of concerns. I have two daughters, ages 9 and 11, who need a mother. While I understand that the officer training will require up to 6 weeks away, I am wary that I may be deployed for longer periods. I don't feel that it would be right to leave them with my husband, who just recently became their step-dad. What are the chances of deployment for nurse practitioners? It seems to me that they would be used more stateside. What options for duty stations are there? My son graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson last week. I loved it there. I love the military environment. Also, my brother just finished 20 years in the Navy. I love veterans as patients. It seems like a good fit. Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer
Based on what you said, the program may not be for you.  I am not even sure if you qualify for the program based on age if you have a son in the military.

I usually do not recommend these type of programs to people if they have these concerns.  the programs are demanding and have a six year commitment upon completion to the military.  You can be sent anywhere in the world after you complete it.  Can you take that chance and uproot your family or live away from them for a long while?

It does not hurt to explore the options and get further information to see if it can be for you.

Spouses usually have a big say in the decision process.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
