Question
Our son is ROTC set to graduate and commission in May.  He completed LDAC this past summer doing great in all areas except his APFT push ups; bringing his overall APFT score down to 180 eve though his 2 mile and situps he maxed out on.  Because of this, he has been told that his chances of being commissioned active duty are not that great.  He also understands that chances of him getting his requested MOS might be hindered because of this and his 2.8 gpa.  What are the requirements?

Answer
he has to be able to pass the Army APFT to get a commission, at this point he should be able to do the required push up, So it is weird that he is not.

As far as 2.8 GPA, thats fine, not great, but fine.  The requested MOS is never guaranteed, it is always done by needs of the Army.  Army First, personal choice second.  It really depends on what he requested as well.  he has to pick 3 Fields, one has to be combat area.

If he is not commissioned active duty, he will have to go reserves, as the Guard will not take him.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
